Marlene Laurent

When Marlene was five she went to stay with her Aunty and Uncle on a farm near Bathurst, New South Wales for a year. Her mother returned to her family home in Melbourne to be with her father.
This is the story of that time, and what life was like in rural Australia in the nineteen-fifties.

Biography

Born in Australia Marlene Laurent grew up in the post war suburb of South Oakleigh. Brought up a Catholic she entered the convent at the Age of 17 after attending boarding school in Fremantle WA. She left the convent following the Ecumenical Council when changes were implemented in the Catholic Church.

She went on to train as a teacher and teaching became a passion. She was actively involved in the Education system and implementing changes to the curriculum.

On retiring she decided to pursue her interest in writing. She is a member of the Caulfield Writer’s Group and the Monash Writer’s group. She has contributed to five anthologies published by the Monash writers Group.

Marlene Lives in East Bentleigh and spends her time cycling, keeping fit at the local gym, reading, writing and travelling. She is member of the Australian Conservation Association, The Wilderness Society and other conservation groups. She takes an interest in her local community.
